OVERTURES

Overtures is a multi-layered installation examining how individuals operate within meticulously orchestrated group dynamics. Over two days, 31 performers navigated a garden according to scripted rules resembling an imagined parlor game. Though their encounters seemed casual—like strangers  do every day—their encounters were precisely choreographed and filmed from a centrally placed dolly.

In the exhibition, this footage was projected on a centrally placed double-sided billboard: one side showed the live-action recording, while the reverse presented an animated version of the choreography. By offering two representations of the same action—each tied to its own concept of time—Overtures questions how illusions of continuity or repetition affect our perception of collective movement. The floor, covered with silkscreens of a formal garden, and the tattered original instructions emphasize the tension between the ephemeral act of performing and its stable, yet time-shifted projections.
